Pekka Pitkäsen luomat teokset Swing Housen aulan seinällä

Iron Age arrived at Swing House

Sculptor Pekka Pitkänen follows the evolution of humanity in his work. The passing of time and his own experiences are sources of inspiration and they have driven him forward during his 50-year career. Many famous institutions in Finland and abroad have exhibited Pitkänen’s works. Works from the Rautakausi series can now be seen in the lobby of Swing House too! In the video, his daughter, Veera Pitkänen, interviews the artist.

The rhythm of life and natural materials are essential parts of Pitkänen’s works. Because we cherish the same values, these works fit perfectly in the Swing House lobby. The Corten steel sails on the building’s facade appealed instantly to the artist and build a connection to his work through their colour and texture. Pitkänen feels the works of his Rautakausi series fit the place well and support the whole in their own calm way.

Carefully designed spaces combined with art create an inspiring work environment that is always good to come to. Anyone is welcome to see Pitkänen’s works in the lobby – Combine your visit with a delicious lunch at the Well7 restaurant!

WELL is a sign of a high-quality workplace

The real estate market is increasingly focusing on the wellbeing of occupants. In Swing House, one of the first WELL-certified properties in Finland, health and wellbeing are a top priority.

WELL™ is the first international quality standard for buildings that focuses on evaluating the wellbeing generated by a building. The standard is based on the measurement of ten areas that affect wellbeing. For example, natural light, air quality, movement, materials and acoustics are assessed with hundreds of indicators. The certificate is issued by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI™).

The developer of Swing House, Elo Mutual Pension Insurance Company, is applying for the international WELL v2™ Gold level quality of building.

“While the more established standards LEED, BREEAM and RTS provide excellent signposts for ecological and energy-efficient design, WELL has shifted the focus onto the wellbeing of the users. Involving our stakeholders in the process from the beginning, we can build a property that genuinely benefits its users,” says Antti Pyötsiä, Project Manager for Elo.

Ten categories that measure wellbeing

WELL v2 is based on ten concepts: Air, Water, Nourishment, Light, Movement, Thermal Comfort, Sound, Materials, Mind and Community. The users will experience these categories through design solutions that support health, efficiency and comfort.

Circadian lighting, advanced indoor air purification, natural architecture, low-emission materials and surface materials that create soothing soundscapes are just some of the many advantages of Swing House as a place to work. The certification requires ongoing effort even after completion: indoor air, for example, must be consistently monitored and reported on throughout the lifecycle of the building.

A unique spatial experience

Swing House features authentic materials, lush greenery and humane design solutions that create a unique spatial experience for the user.

At Swing House, Otaniemi’s 1950s red brick industrial architecture designed by Alvar Aalto meets the shiny new head-office buildings and futuristic high-rises of Keilaniemi. Captivating contrasts, carefully selected materials and design solutions that support wellbeing make Swing House a five-star office environment that meets all WELL criteria.

High-quality materials and architecture utilising natural light play a key role in creating a superior working environment. Proximity to the area’s natural environment, generous use of greenery and a welcoming courtyard are all part of the unique appeal of Swing House.

“Uniquely patterned graphic concrete, weathered Corten steel, high-quality wood and tile floors and large windows lend Swing House a modern, stylish look that has the feel of an historic industrial milieu. The comfort and wellbeing of the users were central to the design of the building every step of the way,” says Elina Törmänen, Interior Architect at L Architects.

Tenants in the property will also love the seven-storey high green wall growing fresh herbs, the soothing soundscape of the common areas and lighting that follows the natural circadian rhythm. During the long and dark winter, lighting has a major impact on our mood and vitality. The central staircase at Swing House is lit by bright and invigorating lighting that wakes up the senses to a new day. Towards the afternoon, the tone of the light turns warmer, emulating the natural cycle of daylight.

Resource efficiency through recycling and greenery solutions

Swing House in Keilaniemi, Espoo, is designed for the wellbeing of the users and the environment.

Swing House features a vertical green wall, which is connected to the central staircase and reaches up to the seventh floor. It is an aesthetic experience and also offers many benefits: in addition to plants that clean the indoor air, various herbs used by the restaurant also grow on the wall, and watering is taken care of by the property’s rainwater system. There are plenty of plants throughout the building: they help purify the indoor air while providing a calming and balancing ambiance.

The property also has a partial green roof, which has a practical purpose: it serves as sound abatement, absorbs and filters rainwater and melting snow, and captures carbon from the atmosphere. The green roof also insulates, which helps reduce the energy consumption of the building. In the summer, the green roof shields against the heat of the sun, cooling down the building, while in the winter it helps keep the heat in.

Besides innovative greenery solutions, the carbon footprint of the property is further reduced by excellent recycling facilities with the aim of minimising the volume of mixed waste while keeping valuable natural resources in circulation.

“Swing House supports our tenants’ sustainability efforts. WELL v2 Gold certified, the property has been designed with an extensive focus on the environmental, health and wellbeing aspects,” says Antti Pyötsiä, Head of Projects at Elo Mutual Pension Insurance Company.
